The Upper Falls' turbulent waters at Old Man's Cave provide a breathtaking view.
Scenic Hiking Trail in a Short Amount of Time
What are you waiting for? The Old Man’s Cave has many hidden features that will make your hike worth it!
“Old man’s cave isn’t a long hike, but there’re incredible sights.”
Hiking is a fantastic way to get fresh air, enjoy nature, and exercise! The Gorge Hike offers you the chance for all three. It’s only 1 mile long, so it shouldn’t take too much time out of your day if that sounds good at first glance. There are flights of stairs into/from this hollow. Still, they’re not too high or difficult once experienced, with practice returning soon after.
The short but steep trail to the Old Man’s cave is worth taking if you have time. Along this path, many incredible features deserve your attention. Like Upper Falls and Devil’s Bathtub- both of which can be seen from far away as they lie at opposite ends of the parkway below it!
For those who want something more active, Lower falls do offer it.
If you have an hour to spend in this area, be sure it’s more than just walking. You’ll want time for pictures and stories along your journey, so stop at least once every 50 yards – there are lots of things worth seeing!
The brilliant colors make these rocks stand out against their duller counterparts around town; take advantage by stopping and taking pictures. The view from atop is unforgettable.
Visit the Visitor Center
The new Visitor Center is a must-see! There are detailed displays highlighting the many trails in this park. And some history and geography on display. The gift shop has plenty of snacks for you to enjoy. It also sells items such as toilet paper if necessary before or after your hike- don’t forget about our superb restroom facilities too!
There is no better place to take in the beautiful views of nature than Old Man’s Cave. Pack your lunch or grab some sandwiches from Grandma Faye nearby and enjoy sitting down with friends, family members & loved ones! There is currently no Hocking Hills lodge restaurant. However, the previous one burned down, so we’ll have to wait until they rebuild it before coming here again for foodies!
Get there early; it gets Crowded.
The cave is a hidden gem with many stunning features that only require an hour to explore. The parking lot and trail often get crowded, but it’s worth the hike if you’re searching for something unique!
The summer and fall weekends can be hectic, so planning is essential if you want some peace during your vacation. We recommend visiting early in the morning or later at night when fewer people are around for pictures!
The off-season can be just as beautiful and much less crowded (except for the weekends in winter)
A time when we get to enjoy our surroundings without all those pesky people ruining it for us!
The Trails Become Slippery
Visit Old Man’s Cave during the winter to experience a frozen wonderland full of beauty and magic. The icicles hanging from cliffs fall covered in a misty spray – it’s all worth a visit for those who love cold weather!
The hiking trails can be slippery and wet, so it’s essential to wear boots or shoes with traction. The rocks on these staircases also make them very dangerous if you don’t watch your step! It will often rain in the springtime, but luckily there’s usually enough sunshine throughout winter, which keeps things from getting too muddy.
The hike to Old Man’s Cave is an excellent way for the whole family, but make sure you wear proper footwear. You may want to change into an extra pair of shoes after your adventure. So those dirty boots don’t get anywhere near what’s left of our car!
Broken Rock Falls
Hike the Broken Rock Falls Spur
Broken Rock Falls is an excellent spot to get out of the way and enjoy some nature. It’s only 0.1 miles long, but it has climbing steps which might be tough for those carrying on with their hike or biking trip from Old Man’s Cave Trailhead near Lower Falls!
Have you ever seen the waterfall on your hike? If not, then this is a must-see. This trail spur will take us right up to it to get an incredible view of this beautiful natural wonder in all its glory!
When you are at the top of this waterfall, a small staircase will take your eye to the bottom, where it meets with an excellent pool. You can see how much water these falls hold and what makes them unique!
There are many reasons to add the Old Man’s Cave Trail in Hocking Hills State Park on your next visit. This hike highlights some incredible features of this area, and it’s popular because there is nothing else like them anywhere!
